Advent Begins

Advent - Week One
Hope
This week our Advent focus is on hope. We have started our Road To Bethlehem unit in religion and will be learning about how to prepare ourselves for the birth of Jesus. Please take the time to ask your child what they have been learning about the season of Advent. A good question for tonight would be about the Angel Gabriel. Who did the Angel Gabriel visit and what was his message?

Advent - Week Two
Peace
This week our Advent focus is on peace. Children are encouraged to think of ways that they can create peace in their hearts, in the classroom and on the school yard as they prepare themselves for Jesus' birth. We are continuing to bring in canned food for the Stittsville Food Bank and winter socks packed with toiletries for the Ottawa Mission.

Homework is Here!

Our homework and reading programs begin this week.

The homework program will go home on a monthly basis and will stay at home until the end of the month. I am including a detailed homework letter in the package tonight to let you know the expectations for the homework notebook.

We will complete the first night of homework together in class so that your child will also understand the expectations.

We will also begin our reading program tonight. Students will be able to choose a book from our levelled reading cart that they should be able to read independently. This book will go home and the package will come back to school each day along with your child's agenda. There is also a detailed letter explaining this reading program in your child's Growing with Books folder.

Each of the titles above is linked to a copy of the letters being sent home. Please do not hesitate to contact me through your child's agenda if you have any questions about the materials that come home tonight.

Thank you!

This week we are continuing to learn about organizing information into bar graphs, writing a simple paragraph, and the importance of kindness.

*Homework Note
  • Our regular homework program will begin in October.
  • I will be encouraging students to bring in leaves over the next few weeks to incorporate into our science and art studies.

Scholastic

Our class is participating in Scholastic Book Club this year. Each month during the school year I will send home a Club flyer with a different selection of books offered. You’ll find award-winning books, as well as old and new favorites.

It is easy to order. Just look over the flyer with your child, select the books you want, mark them on the order form on the back of the flyer, and return the order form to me. You can choose to make an online payment or send a check payable to Scholastic Book Clubs with your order form. The books will arrive about two weeks after I send the class order to Scholastic.

Our first order is due this Friday, September 18th.
